Tonight there\u2019s rainbow trout for dinner.<\/p>\n

Lena went in to work to get the trout.<\/p>\n

Lena has a great \u2013 she\u2019s always bringing something home:<\/p>\n

First discount salami, then cherries for 160 rubles a kilo,<\/p>\n

Then homestyle butter, and then fresh trout \u2013 already for the third time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Everyone is waiting for the trout: a bottle of Chilean white in the fridge,<\/p>\n

\u201cCollective Farmgirl\u201d melon for desert smells fragrant and sweet.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m lying on the couch, dying of hunger, \u2013 waiting.<\/p>\n

Fedor the cat is waiting next to me. He won\u2019t get anything,<\/p>\n

But he\u2019s keeping me company waiting, fulfilling his cat duties.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When Lena arrives, we greet her in the hallway.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s carrying a bag. In the bag is the trout.<\/p>\n

The trout is pleasantly heavy. Its scales glisten.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s already nine o\u2019clock,<\/p>\n

But tonight there\u2019ll be trout, come what may.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The cats and I sit in the kitchen and watch Lena cook the trout:<\/p>\n

She pierces the flesh and inserts lemon, like fingers into a wound,<\/p>\n

Makes a boat out of foil, makes a bed of onion,<\/p>\n

Tells us to turn the oven on to 180.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We set the table. Slice cucumbers \u2013 they\u2019re great with the fish \u2013<\/p>\n

Get the chilled wine from the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

Complaining \u201cIt\u2019s crazy hot, drives you nuts, so hot,\u201d<\/p>\n

We open the oven, unfold the foil, salivate and gulp.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s completely pointless to write about a quiet little pleasure.<\/p>\n

Nothing\u2019s more of a bore than poems about everything being fine.<\/p>\n

The only comfort is this: when I will lay dying<\/p>\n

It\u2019s certain that I\u2019ll remember neither my own nor other\u2019s poetry,<\/p>\n

But this July instead, hot as a boiled teapot,<\/p>\n

The trout\u2019s pink meat, a fishbone nearly swallowed,<\/p>\n

A glass of cold chardonnay sweating with condensation,<\/p>\n
