A piece of rail hung off a lime tree branch,<\/p>\n

And then the smell of pudding, freshly baked,<\/p>\n

And a pink gladiolus twice your height<\/p>\n

In the potato plot<\/p>\n

(Were they too hesitant to weed or just too busy?) \u2014<\/p>\n

Now that’s when you were shown<\/p>\n

The way it will be after life.<\/p>\n

Heaven won’t be a blissful Salzburg park,<\/p>\n

Or a Prague’s crooked quarter, with its cozy streetlights,<\/p>\n

Or a majestic Umbrian vineyard \u2014<\/p>\n

But just a little boarding school in Pereslavl,<\/p>\n

Where in July I stopped for barely half an hour<\/p>\n

While passing through,<\/p>\n

drawn by the childhood scent of pudding.<\/p>\n

So that was Heaven, and I didn’t know \u2014<\/p>\n

But now, they’ll say, come in<\/p>\n
