Lilya Kalaus was born in 1969, Almaty, Kazakhstan. She has many talents: philologist, author, literary editor, script writer, radio presenter, artist. Recently Lilya has started author’s course of lectures on creative writing. Lilya’s stories and narratives were published in various\u00a0magazines and\u00a0online editions of Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Germany, Ukraine and the USA. Lilya Kalaus is an author of 7 books, both for kids (together with Zira Nauryzbayeva) and for adults. Lilya is a laureate of the 1st and the 3rd prize of «Soros-Kazakhstan-Debut» literary contest (1996); laureate of the 1st prize of «Rukh» literary contest (2017). And here\u2019s my answer: it has done me plenty of good. It gave me my daily bread for five years after I finished university. The new age dawned, and in the 1990s they started opening new colleges with new programs of study, and the new deans took pleasure in resurrecting half-forgotten subjects. Latin for lawyers, for example. I fed Latin to future prosecutors, attorneys, judges and notaries in a brand new legal college. I fed myself, too, thanks to what my own instructors taught me so well. So there\u2019s that. As a student I also translated, more or less, some long dull text from Latin about a farm worker, about an ordinary day in his life. He got up at four in the morning, fed the pigs, ground a handful of grain, sifted the flour, milked the cow, kneaded the dough, cooked some bread, and ate it. Then he went out to the fields. Breakfast \u00e0 la antiquity. I\u2019d kill myself, I thought as I slogged through that translation. I\u2019d rather die of hunger and all that was rubbish.<\/p>\n Life, as the great poet once said, turned out to be long. The now-former students of that college have made themselves into real people and retooled themselves from jurists into famous bloggers, and the college doesn\u2019t exist anymore, and Latin has been tossed aside and forgotten, though it still sends me a quick note now and then.<\/p>\n Let me paint you a bucolic picture of today\u2019s morning in quarantine. I got up at four because my furry-tailed livestock were demanding cat food. I fed them and went out to the fields. I wasn’t even half sleepy anyway. I harnessed up good spelling and punctuation and sowed a huge plot of somebody else\u2019s text with seeds of wisdom in the form of editorial corrections. Then the next batch of mouths to feed stirred in their warm nests. They\u2019d be up soon, demanding breakfast. The latest nuisance is that we have no bread. There\u2019s no going to the store because I\u2019m in a high-risk group and my family would have my head if I usurped power like that. And so I baked some bread using kefir. Hail!, or whatever you should say there. The denizens of my apartment all rose to the aroma and warmth of baking bread, still sleepy, not talking, like zombies. They started digging into the hot kefir bread and ate so much the sun is already setting on the second loaf. And meanwhile I\u2019m back in the fields, again sowing what is good, wise and eternal. Remotely, as usual.<\/p>\n And, as usual, from time to time I use WhatsApp to talk to my husband and children, who are in the same apartment.
