Nikolay Bogatyrev is а scientist (PhD in biology) and an engineer. He delivers lectures at the universities of the UK (Oxford, London, Bath, etc.), Europe and Asia. He works in the fields of biology, engineering, theory of invention (TRIZ), holds 30 patents on inventions, has published over 100 research articles and four books in eight languages. Nikolay also is a producer and author of series of popular educational films about methods of creative thinking. Nikolay graduated Perm State University (Faculty of Biology), then he worked for 20 years in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok (Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science), studying ecology and behaviour of various social animals (bumblebees, ants, birds and rodents). Nikolay Bogatyrev was amongst the first experts in the world who began to develop methods and equipment for the use of bumblebees in greenhouses to pollinate various agricultural crops. He also developed special measures to preserve populations of wild bees of different species: this issue would not be so burning now, if warning words of biologists would be treated with greater attention. For 20 years in biology, Nikolay Bogatyrev  worked in expeditions in tundra and Arctic Circle, Kazakh steppes, Siberian forests, Altai, Ural, Pyrenees mountains and the deserts of Central Asia. Since the 90s, Nikolay Bogatyrev regularly participated in studies of behaviour and the development of measures for the protection of wild pollinators in different research groups at the Universities of Belgium and Holland. In 2002 Nikolai was invited to work at the University of Bath (Great Britain) in the field of bionics (biomimetics), developing new technical solutions based on ideas from biology. Working with industry both via the university and his own consulting company BioTRIZ Ltd., N.R. Bogatyrev, as a biologist and inventor, participated in many innovative projects. For example: development of radiation protection for Space missions and methods of ground drilling on asteroids under the condition of micro-gravity (for European Space Agency); design of medical equipment (for the Philips); protection of London-2012 Olympics from terrorists in cooperation with the laboratories of the UK Department of Defense, design of special architectural solutions for residential buildings in extreme climate conditions, etc. Nikolay Bogatyrev’s short essays cover topics that do not fit into the rigid framework of the contemporary science. Being “field zoo-psychologist” he studied life not in the laboratory, where animals display the behaviour more similar to patients of mental hospitals. Observing behaviour of different animals in their natural environment, he came up with conclusions that do not fit into the doctrine of science. As zoo-psychologist, Nikolay is very attentive to what is happening around  him and shares some experience that is difficult to comprehend from the widely accepted viewpoints. He talks about unusual, strange events that cannot be explaind withing the paradigm of science, or vice versa – about ordinary everyday situations that, like a key, suddenly open the door into previously unknown, leading to shocking conclusions. His stories have something in common both in form and content with the stories of Viktor Pelevin and Haruki Murakami. All events that Nikolay describes he witnessed in  the reality – his stories are not fiction. Bogatyrev’s stories give food both to mind and soul of people who seek revelation and answers to the questions about life and death, opening the meaning of our existence in this amazing world. They are like a silent question that touches the deepest strings of people’s souls. This question revokes some childhood memories …, sensations …, feelings and requires an answer, for everyone their own.

From Biography of Nikolay Bogatyrev

BILLIARD

On the way home walking through the unbearable summer heat and trying to keep in the shade of the trees, I always slowed down in front of the open door of the club to catch a slightly refreshing draft of cold air. From the opened door I could hear the sounds of nocking billiards’ balls and the voices of players who, as I thought, were arguing about the rules of the game … Also, games varied, the rules were changing, and different players were always hidden in the dark of the club hall, whilst outside there was a dazzling sun … A desire to come inside for a bit longer, learn in detail the rules and understand the meaning of the game, get to know the players and try to play billiard by myrself was always less than the desire to get home as soon as possible, where you could safely hide from the heat, where everything was familiar: people, objects and activities.

After a minute, looking inside the club hall and seeing the green cloth, blackening pockets, dimly gleaming balls, straight sides of the table, I  used to rush home …

***

Our house, like other neighbouring ones, was on the edge of a large green rectangle, which everyone called a glade. They said that in old times – before the war – there was an orchard … When I appeared at that place, the garden was no longer there, but there was a resemblance of a lawn; on its far borders were football gates, and in glade’s corners there were jumping pits with yellow sawdust. The whole sporty look of this place was created for physical education lessons: there was a school nearby …

Sometimes local football team were coming here. Then the hefty guys were constantly rushing about the green background, glistening dimly with their sweaty backs and screaming something senseless …

When the glade was empty, I could come there and do much more interesting things – ride a bicycle, fly a kite, carefully compare the diverse kinds of  grasse growing in different corners of the glade … It was especially interesting to pick sawdust in the holes for jumping and find amazing rhinoceros beetles and their giant larvae. Once champignons mushrooms grew outside the football goal …

I do not remember that in those years there were lawn mowers, so an old bony man mowed the meadow. Washed and sun-bleached light blue overalls and a straw hat with the brim pulled low over the face were always recognisable. He always answered to my greetings with a smile, and I hurried on, not wanting to distract the person from the work, which apparently provided him  with a decent income: haystacks were quickly bought up by residents of distant villages.

It was always something interesting happening on the glade: jackals came down from the mountains at night, schoolchildren lit a big fire, or someone put up a tent …

In the nearest corner, in a small house, lived an elegant gypsy doctor, a connoisseur of beauty in all its manifestations. In front of her house with a high porch there was always a huge flower bed, blooming almost all year round … The tanned face, accurate beautiful literate speech, the smile that ran as a shadow over the expressive face – all these were unforgettable, just like her life story: during the II World War, working as a nurse in hospital, she met a young military doctor. They quickly came together, which is not surprising in times of such disaster as a war … However, the war scattered/separated these people who had just begun their life as a family… They searched for each other after the war, but that did not give  any results, and Olga Viktorovna (that was the name of the lady) got married years later … However, the blows of an invisible cue turned out to be unpredictable, and Olga Viktorovna’s husband unexpectedly died, disappearing like a ball in a pocket. But once Olga Viktorovna was traveling by train and … happened to be in the same carriage with her first husband – a doctor from a military hospital … Since then they lived happily ever after till the end of their days … Years flew by and her husband left this world first, soon Olga Viktorovna followed him … The orphaned house, having stood empty for some time completely dilapidated like a card house and simply disappeared, and  prickly blackberry grew wildly  on its place…

***

Laura lived next to Olga Viktorovna … For some reason, she was rarely seen … She was 30 years old, and she was dazzlingly beautiful … Her whole figure seemed to consist of billiard balls of different sizes, which were turning and rolling while she was moving … She was usually wearing clothes in a minimal quantity, but never tasteless … Her unique manifestation was highlighted by the fact that she always appeared with a dog of a breed that was very rare in those days in Russia – a collie … The dog was also amazingly beautiful and unusual … It always annoyed me: I just did not have time to fully observe both of them! … Only once I decide to speak to Laura, asking her about the dog. To my surprise, the dog friendly wagged its tail, and its owner allowed me to caressly stroke, unfortunately – only the dog … She briefly told about this unusual breed with her bright smile and “rolled” on  further… Since then I have never met neither Laura nor her dog …

***

In a tiny house across the road lived a family with an unusual surname – Kaloshko. The head of the family clearly imitated Stalin: in a white linen cap, in a light jacket and trousers, he stood, bristling his moustaches, in front of the house, like a sentry on duty, vigilantly looking not so much at those passing by, as seeing invisible horizons and superior goals inaccessible and invisible for others … He was 70 years old, and his whole appearance was saying that the whole twentieth century history of this country and the whole world was clear and understandable to him, he looked like he knows everything, but says nothing  not to interfere the future … The surrounding neighbours either laughed or were scared of him.

But his wife – Niusia – was  like a“roundness“ itself: face, eyebrows, shoulders, and most importantly, her smile. She constantly rolled, even when she was talking to you, moving among the greenery of the garden near the house, glowing with her ivory face against the background of garden trees …

Their adopted daughter Rita lived with them. Rita worked as a nurse in a sanatorium of the Ministry of Defense, where the fascinating cable cars were moving to the sea amongst the dense subtropical forest,.. She was 35 years old, at work she was surrounded by men, but – as neighbours sighed – she could not get married … Thin bony face with a narrow nose that looked like a beak, huge fiery mane of copper-red hair, bright lipstick, fluffy skirts, unimaginable diversity and brightness of the blouse created an impression of fireworks … Her conversation was always full of exclamation phrases and a fountain of emotions. Sadly, her life turned out to be exactly – like fireworks! – bright and fleeting … She died soon … But still  now she is walking, shakily stepping over the cobblestones on unprecedented heels, coming home tried to tune an old guitar, decorated with a silk dark blue ribbon …

The other houses stood far from our glade, and those who lived there came rarely on its green cloth …

***

Now, decades later, I remember the destinies of these people, who are completely similar and … not similar to each other – like the trajectories of billiard balls … Once the blows of an unknown cue had scattered these people, and they continued to move, roll along invisible sides … Often they would stay calmly for a long time on a green cloth – quietly living in the corners of a mown glade bounded by steep sides – the slopes of mountains with dense forest … … New balls were appearing from somewhere, very similar to those that had fallen into the pockets … And the game continued …

I also experienced expected and unexpected blows/strikes – both the cue and other balls that threw me from the corner I knew to the other end – either the table, or the world … And the game went on …

Years passed, and one day I had a long conversation with the Theorist.

“You know, matter, energy and information are considered as some basic foundations of the world, which are either analogous to each other, or are simply different manifestations of even more fundamental entity,” I said.

– Yes, that’s right, – agreed my interlocutor.

“It’s amazing that matter and energy not only have a lot in common, but also are general laws. Well, for example, probably the most important is the conservation law: conservation of mass and energy after Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, – I continued.

– Yes, of course, – answered the Theorist.

– But you know, I noticed that in this case physicists … somehow … omit information from this list … – I shared my observation …

– So what do you think – does the conservation law apply to information ??? … – I asked the question concluding a long introduction.

– Well, of course! – My friend answered immediately.

– But … how ?! … – I was intrigued.

– Well, imagine … a billiard ball! … It remembers all the previous cue strikes, collisions with the sides and with other  balls… – Theorist explained calmly.

… At that very second, I remembered the billiard balls from the old club … Each of them was unique, although keeping its round shape. Scratches, half-erased numbers and even chipped marks – all this did not add impeccability to the trajectories of the balls, but sometimes it made the game unpredictable, as I heard from the players when passing by the open doors of the club …

  ***

So am I, still rolling along the edge of another glade – Lympsham Green, the name which means «a glade convenient for living» if we translate this from English … Neat green accurately mowed lawns are everywhere … What is ahead?  It is difficult for me to see because of permanent English fogs – either a pocket, or next blow … All my attention is focused on the green field and the rolling balls ..

And I still don’t have enough time to think or look closely to this burning question: what are the rules of this endless game and, most importantly – who are the players ??? …
