Angelic Battle Continues in Cyberspace

The story about the fight between Archangel Michael and evil Satanael-Antichrist by Pseudo-Chrysostomus (described well lately by Minczew) is one of the best known pieces of the old Bogomil (or Manichean) lore. The ultimate battle between the first-class superheroes and super-villains of the Dualist cosmology – including a kaiju-like guest appearance and spectacular weather-control effects – has literally received a cult status among the broad public in both Bulgarian Empires and beyond. Recently we could have celebrated the 40th anniversary of the critical publication of its Church Slavonic version by Anissava Miltenova.

Yet it is not well known outside the scholar circles, that it was translated into modern Bulgarian by pop Punčo already in 1796! This version has been now carefully annotated and translated into English by Polina Mihova of the team working on the digital version of the Punčo’s Sbornik. The story is now available for free, along with the facsimile of the neatly handwritten Sbornik provided by the National Library „St. St. Kirill i Metodii“ in Sofia, and also new features of the digital edition like the Syntax- and Token-Browser – here.
