Engaging in research with Pacific communities as a non-Pacific researcher: reflecting on lessons learnt
In their article, Margaret Flavell and Emma Cunningham reflect on their experiences as non-Pacific researchers working with Pacific students and families in Aotearoa New Zealand. They explain that their motivation for writing comes from the challenges they faced around power imbalances and positionality in cross-cultural research. To address these issues, they deliberately incorporated Pacific perspectives and methodologies, aiming to ensure that their research prioritized the voices and values of participants rather than their own agendas. Their goal is to share what they have learned, offering guidance to other researchers seeking to build respectful, reciprocal relationships with Pacific communities.
