Methodology marriage: Merging Western and Pacific research design
This paper examines the perceptions of Fa’a Samoa (the Samoan way) among New Zealand-born Samoans living in Brisbane, Australia. It employs a combination of Pacific and Western methodologies, including talanoa, participant observation, and literature review, to ensure both academic rigor and cultural validity. The study finds that barriers to Fa’a Samoa in this group include experiences of disconnection and burden, while its carriers are framed as an ancestral gift, a source of identity, support, and respect.
