Future Seas
Future Seas is a collaborative research initiative based at the University of Tasmania, led by the Centre for Marine Socioecology in partnership with CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and other global institutions. The project brings together over 100 researchers from diverse disciplines to envision sustainable futures for the world’s oceans. It aligns with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and focuses on 12 key challenges such as ocean governance, biodiversity, and climate resilience. The project emphasizes actionable, evidence-based pathways to help policy makers and communities make informed decisions about ocean stewardship. Through its work, Future Seas aims to bridge science, society, and policy for a healthier marine future. The project is highly collaborative in structure and approach. It involves interdisciplinary cooperation among scientists from fields such as ecology, economics, law, oceanography, engineering, and public health. Early career researchers, Indigenous leaders, and traditional knowledge holders are actively engaged, ensuring a broad range of perspectives and co-produced knowledge. This structure not only fosters innovation but also ensures that solutions are both scientifically rigorous and socially grounded.
