Te Aliki Koloso Kaveia (deceased 2009)
Part of Team Pacific Traditions Society. Originator and Creator of the Vaka Taumako Project. “For many years, Te Aliki Kaveia remained the last living, able-bodied practitioner of the ancient voyaging traditions of the Duff and Reef Islands Polynesians. In 1993, he reached out to Dr. Mimi George to help realize his vision of training a new generation to build and sail voyaging canoes using ancestral designs and techniques. Kaveia passed away in 2009, at an estimated age of 98, leaving behind a powerful legacy of cultural revival and oceanic knowledge.”
