Te Aliki Jonas Hollani ( deceased 2022)

Part of Team Pacific Traditions Society. Originator and Creator of the Vaka Taumako Project. “Te Aliki Jonas Holani learned the art of building voyaging canoes from his father and uncles. He served as foreman under Te Aliki Kaveia in the construction of traditional TePuke and Te Alo Lili canoes, and gained extensive experience in steering and open-sea voyaging alongside him. Following Kaveia’s passing, Jonas assumed leadership as captain, continuing the legacy by teaching others and leading longer training voyages. Even in his late 80s, Te Aliki Holani remained deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of voyagers. His enduring dedication and warm sense of humor were deeply valued by all who worked with him.”
