Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)

“SPREP’s main aims are waste management and pollution control in the Pacific. The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is the principal regional organization mandated by Pacific Island governments and administrations to protect and manage the Pacific environment and natural resources. Established in 1993, SPREP embodies the region’s commitment to sustainable development through improved environmental management. Headquartered in Apia, Samoa, with offices in Fiji, Solomon Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Vanuatu. The strategic direction of SPREP is defined in the 2017–2026 Strategic Plan, which outlines its mandate, vision, and priority programmes. These are aligned with four Regional Goals aimed at achieving resilience and sustainability in Pacific communities: Climate Change Resilience: Enhancing Pacific peoples’ resilience to climate change and disasters, which impose significant economic, social, and environmental costs. As host of the Pacific Climate Change Centre, SPREP coordinates regional climate action. Biodiversity Conservation: Ensuring healthy and resilient island and ocean ecosystems through leadership in the implementation of global multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and the Regional Framework for Nature Conservation and Protected Areas. SPREP also acts as the secretariat for the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation. Waste Management and Pollution Control: Improving waste management and pollution control through the Cleaner Pacific 2025 framework, which guides regional cooperation and strategic action. Environmental Governance: Strengthening environmental governance by supporting policy development, planning, impact assessment, monitoring, and reporting. SPREP assists member countries in aligning environmental governance with broader socio-economic development goals.”
