iTaukei Institute of Language and Culture
The iTaukei Institute of Language and Culture (TILC) in Fiji is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting iTaukei culture, heritage, and language. Originally established as the Fijian Dictionary Project in 1974, it was renamed in 1986 and now oversees key initiatives such as the iTaukei Monolingual Dictionary and the documentation of dialects from Fiji’s 14 provinces. A major program of the Institute is the Cultural Mapping Project, which records traditional knowledge and cultural expressions across 1,171 villages to support cultural preservation and address intellectual property issues. TILC also operates a resource centre, hosts radio and print outreach, and works with local and international partners under frameworks like the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage.
