Philipp Gibbs
Philip Gibbs is a Divine Word Missionary priest born in New Zealand. He came to PNG as a student in 1973. He has worked as a parish priest in Porgera and Par in the Enga Province, as a seminary lecturer at CTI in Port Moresby, as a researcher at the Melanesian Institute in Goroka and as a research advisor to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference. Currently he is Professor of Social Research at Divine Word University and head of Research and Higher Degrees. Philip Gibbs leads research into sociocultural dynamics in PNG, covering electoral processes, witchcraft accusation related violence, and church history, while also mentoring postgraduate scholars and producing visual media. His work integrates anthropological fieldwork, social policy analysis and theology, aiming to reduce sorcery‑related harm and promote governance and religious understanding in Oceania. Father Gibbs was involved in the INDIS (Indigenous Sustainable Development) project, where he worked with Indigenous communities to support their visions for sustainable and inclusive development.
