Let’s Play Kula
“The film Let’s Play Kula is an educational documentary (27′) by Susanne Kuehling (Executive Producer) and Gina Knapp (writing, camera, sound, and editing) that introduces young viewers to the traditional Kula exchange, which takes place in the Pacific region, specifically on the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea. Kula is a symbolic exchange game involving valuable shell necklaces and armbands, where respect, generosity, and hospitality are central values. Participants—both men and women—travel between islands by canoe, receiving accommodation and food for free, while also transporting goods for other families. Children learn the rules, routes (major and minor channels), and the value of the items from older members of the community. Older, well-traveled shell pieces are considered especially valuable. Kula is closely linked to social and spiritual practices, such as how people deal with mourning periods or the symbolic reopening of the game by offering shell gifts. It is regarded as an important cultural practice that teaches children respect, sharing, and a sense of community.”
