Bazabaza:Lex

Bazabaza:Lex

An online lexicographic platform developed by Jocelyn Aznar. The practice of lexicography should be connected more explicitly with ethnographic methods and be distinguished from the perspective of building a dictionary, one possibility among others. Drawing on my ongoing work with the Nisvai community of South-East Malekula, Vanuatu, I present examples (see example 1 for instance) of discourses relevant for doing lexicography that showcases the limitations I was facing with the usual lexicographic tools and workflow. I introduce the online lexicographic platform Bazabaza:lex I work on, which offers a more flexible framework to better represent multilingual contents and enables its users to define their own units and metadata so that they can be more accurate about how lexical knowledge emerges in specific socio-cultural settings. By making it possible to record and reference the metalinguistic discussions (Canut 1998; Taylor 2014) , negotiations, and multiple viewpoints that shape lexical understanding, the platform seeks to highlight the speakers’ contributions and acknowledge their role as co-creators of knowledge.
