Small Island Cultures Research Initiative (SICRI) (since 2004)

Small Island Cultures Research Initiative (SICRI) (since 2004)

Initially founded by Philip Hayward (editor of Shima) and Danny Long, “to facilitate communication and collaboration between researchers and cultural practitioners working with small island communities. Key to SICRI’s activities is the principle that external researchers should develop their projects in consultation with island communities and should reciprocate such co-operation with appropriate assistance and facilitation of local cultural initiatives.” SICRI organises Island Studies International Conferences, seeks for collaborations with institutions, research centres and local island organizers. It publishes journals such as Island Studies, Okinawan Journal of Island Studies, as well as edited volumes about, e.g. “Island cultures and festivals” (2024) with conference proceedings.
