Das darauf gemalte Bild heisst Tafelbild. Um Holztafel oder Leinwand zur Aufnahme von Malerei geeignet zu machen, bedarf es der Grundierung. Zur Anwendung kommen \u00d6l- und Temperafarben. Die Geschichte der Tafelmalerei beginnt bei den Mumienbildnissen der Sp\u00e4tantike. In der abendl\u00e4ndischen Kunst gelten mittelalterliche Altarvors\u00e4tze (Antependien) aus dem 11. Jahrhundert als erste Tafelbilder. Im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert verbreiten sich Tafelbilder unterschiedlichen Formats in Italien: von kleinen Marien- und Christusbildnissen bis zu monumentalen Tafelkreuzen.
