Hispanized Brazil

Quaraí is the city adjacent to Artigas, and is totally Brazilian. However, Brazilians are more than accustomed to welcoming their Hispanic neighbours on a daily basis, given that products in Brazil are much cheaper than in Uruguay. Communication is in Portuguese, Spanish, and sometimes to a degree in Portuñol. The marvel of Artiguense speakers is that they are able to accommodate to such a diversity of communicative situations.

Land of “gauchos”

About 15 kilometres from the Brazilian city you can find “fazendas” of this type: a modest family that owns miles of land, teeming with cattle. The language spoken here is purely Portuguese in its “gaucho variety”. These people are aware of the reality of nearby Uruguay, but it is somewhat more distant for them.
